Thaw Turkey in the Fridge
Refrigerator thawing is the method USDA recommends when you have lead time. Allow about 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds — a 20 lb turkey can need roughly four to five days on a bottom shelf, not on the counter.
This page opens with a 20 lb example so the day count is obvious. Use the controls below for a smaller or larger bird. Cold-water timing still appears for comparison, but the prose focuses on fridge planning.
Start early enough that the bird is thawed before you brine or roast — this tool does not track cook temperatures.
Planning numbers only. Thaw timing follows USDA published guidance; cook-time safety is not calculated here. Weight and guest count stay in your browser — never in the URL.
| Turkey weight | 20 lb |
|---|---|
| Refrigerator thaw | 4 days to 5 days |
| Cold-water thaw | 10 hours |
Timing follows USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service thawing guidance for refrigerator and cold-water methods. This page is a planning aid — it does not replace reading current USDA instructions or using a food thermometer at cook time.
