Thaw Turkey in Cold Water
Cold-water thawing is faster than the fridge: USDA lists about 30 minutes per pound, with the water changed every 30 minutes. An 18 lb turkey can take around nine hours of active attention — not a fit for overnight on the counter.
The worked example here uses 18 lb so the hour total is clear. Controls below let you compare fridge time if you still have calendar room.
Keep the bird in its wrapper, submerge in cold tap water, and cook immediately after thawing per USDA instructions.
Planning numbers only. Thaw timing follows USDA published guidance; cook-time safety is not calculated here. Weight and guest count stay in your browser — never in the URL.
| Turkey weight | 18 lb |
|---|---|
| Refrigerator thaw | 3 days, 15 hours to 4 days, 12 hours |
| Cold-water thaw | 9 hours |
Timing follows USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service thawing guidance for refrigerator and cold-water methods. This page is a planning aid — it does not replace reading current USDA instructions or using a food thermometer at cook time.
