How Much Salt for My Pool?
If you only know your pool is “about fifteen thousand gallons” and your salt is reading low, you still need both numbers before you buy bags. The worked example here uses 15,000 gallons, 2,800 ppm current, and a 3,200 ppm target.
Controls below accept straight gallon entry or dimensions in feet. Bag counts round up to whole bags at the size you select — 40 lb pool salt is the common retail bag.
Add in stages if you are far below range; retest after circulation rather than dumping everything at once.
Result
| Pool volume | 15,000 gal |
|---|---|
| Raise salinity by | 400 ppm |
| Salt to add | 50 lb |
| 40 lb bags (rounded up) | 2 |
| Leftover after bags | 30 lb |
About 1 lb of salt per 1,000 gallons raises salinity roughly 120 ppm. Estimates only — confirm with your test kit.
